Coleman is a Lancashire native. She attended Arnold School Blackpool, where she scored straight A's for A-levels. When Coleman was asked about her Emmerdale character she stated she regretted having not had the typical university experience. Coleman was part of a group known as In Yer Space at her school. They presented Crystal Clear in Edinburgh Festival. The play also got a positive reception. Coleman was awarded the award with a prestigious award for her performance. Coleman got the part as Jasmine Thomas while she was auditioning at drama schools. The audition took place in 2005. In 2007, Coleman was nominated for two Awards. In 2007, the British Soap Awards nominated her for the title of best newcomer. In the National Television Awards, she received the award for most popular newcomer. Coleman was awarded nominations in the categories of Best Actress, Sexiest Woman and for the Best Dramatic Performance in the British Soap Awards 2009. Coleman is nominated as Best Actress by the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat of Doctor Who revealed in a news event on 21st of March, 2012, that Coleman will take over the role of Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat picked her for the role due to the ease with which she worked together with Smith and also because she could speak faster than him.
